Description:

The Marine Corps Marathon is just around the corner – Sunday, Oct. 25 – and APTA is partnering with the medical team to provide exceptional on-course care for 40,000 runners. We’re looking for licensed PTs and PTAs as well as students to join the medical team and keep athletes moving strong.

Why Volunteer?

  • Incredible Event: Be part of one of the country’s most iconic races, supporting athletes as they tackle 26.2 miles through the nation’s capital.
  • Hands-On Experience: You’ll see and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal issues in real time.
  • Networking: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with other PTs, PTAs, physicians, athletic trainers, and EMS. It’s a great way to build professional relationships and meet potential collaborators or referral sources.
  • Showcase PT Expertise: Every runner and fellow volunteer you meet is a potential advocate for the value of physical therapy in sports, injury prevention, and performance.

Volunteer Roles

  • Aid Stations (10 along the course): Deliver quick assessments and interventions to assist runners along the course.
  • Finish Line Main Medical Tent: Provide immediate post-race care to athletes who need your expertise.

Key Details

  • Date & Time: Race starts at 7:20 a.m.; volunteer shift approximately 6–8 hours (exact schedule to follow).
  • Licensure: Because most of the course is on federal property, PTs and PTAs licensed in any U.S. state are eligible. We will also need a small number of PTs and PTAs licensed in Virginia for three or four specific stations.
  • Free Course & CEUs: After race day, you’ll receive access to an APTA running course (online) at no cost.
  • Supplies: All treatment supplies — tables, gloves, and more — are provided.
  • Insurance Coverage: Liability coverage for race day is fully arranged through GWU Hospital.
  • Housing/Transportation: You will need to provide your own housing and transportation to and from the race. Additional details on how to get to your aid station or the main tent will be provided at a later date.

This is a unique opportunity to serve the running community, sharpen your clinical skills in a dynamic environment, and represent our profession on a national stage.

Thank you for considering this exciting way to give back, learn, and celebrate physical therapy’s vital role in health and performance.
